Week 17, Assignment 17

Application and Implications

Video - Week Seventeen, Lecture Seventeen

What will it do?

For now the Pineapple Desheller will remove the shelter/eyes/skin of the Pineapple. The pineapple will just be placed inside the machine and there will be a cutting mechanism which will deshell the eyes on the pineapple. The cutting mechanism will be having a cutter blade for deshelling

Who's done what beforehand?

As per my survey in the local market I didn't found any automated thing that can deshelling or peeling off pineapples. But I found few manual peelers that can just remove the pineapple eatable pulb from indie the shell by just rotating it manually with a lot of power. In the local market people just take a sharp knife and peel the shell out of pineapple, which removes the shell but lots of eyes of the shell still doesn't gets removed. Plus whatever things are available in market for this purpose is quite expensive and slow in process, which is not at all affordable for locals or small scale vendors

What materials and components will be required?

With the research that I have done according to the need of the project, I will need atleast these many items listed below:

• Lead Screw - For moving the cutter up and down for deshelling the pineapple

• Acrylic - For making the frame

• Board - I will initially try its mechanism with an arduino board then creat a network for operating motor

• Stepper Motor - I will be using a stepper motor for operating the cutter'smovement up and down

• Coupling - Coupling will be needed for attaching the lead screw with the motor shaft

• Pineapple Slicer - This will be placed on the top of the bed for slicing the pineapple.

Where will they come from?

Mostly all the stuff getting used for this project will be coming the Tata Lab at IITB, and some from Vigyan Ashram Fablab. Almost all the materials are avilable here in the lab so I don't have to go out for procuring the material.

How much will it cost?

The entire material cost for the project will not be more than INR 10,000. Basically this cost is for the first prototype so if its been made properly and in mass then the cost will reduce.

Bill of Material:

Mechanical

• Acrylic Sheet of 300mm x 600mm size 3mm in thickness - 5 Nos. (Lab)

• Flexible Coupling - 2 Nos. (Lab)

• Cutter Blade - 1 Nos. (Amazon)

• M8 Stud Screw - 450 mm length (Lab)

• M8 Nut - 2 Nos. (Lab)

• Guide Rods of 8mm diameter & 450 mm length - 2 Nos (Lab)

Electronics

• Copper Clad 100mm x 50mm - 1 Nos. (Lab)

• Resistors SMD 10K, 499 ohms - 1 Each (Lab)

• Capacitor SMD 100nF, 1uF, 10uF - 1 Each (Lab)

• Atmega 328P AU - 1 Nos. (lab)

• 2 DC Motor (Lab)

• SMD Switch - 1 (Lab)

• LED SMD - 2 (lab)

• 20 MHz Crystal - 1 (Lab)

What parts and systems will be made?

• Frame

• Coupling

• Gear

• Stepper Driver

• Cutting Mechanism

• Pineapple Clamping Mechanism

What processes will be used?

• Laser cutting - For making the Frame

• 3D Printer - For making components that are not being made subtractively

• Modela - For making PCB for controlling the operations

• Vinyl Cutter - For making branding Logo

What tasks need to be completed?

I have almost completed the design of my project just a bit are left out for some alternatives to found out about it. As the design is completed I will start fabricating the machine. In parallel to the designing I am also procuring all the components available in the lab which will be useful for my project. As I am finished with all the mechanical fabrication work soon after that I will be gettting started with Electronics work for my project.

What questions need to be answered?

• Will the Pineapple be fully deshelled?

• Is the process fast enough to be adapted by the people in market?

What is the schedule?

• Design Work need to be completed in the coming week.

• Mechanical Fabrication work need to be completed before 7th of June.

• Electronics Work need to be completed before 11th of June.

• Final Finishing, Touchup and Testing should get completed before 12th of June.

• Documentation work will be done simultaniously but in general it should be completed before 13th of June

This will be my whole target for completing the project.

How will it be evaluated?

It should be evaluated on the basis of the speed of deshelling the pineapple, Price of the whole Prototype as compared to available one. Basically this machine will be just a proof of concept for a much greater product. For now if the machine is able to prove it is working and giving me an idea of the problems and areas of improvement as concerned with the development to be done in various areas. Many questions are to be answered from this prototype as about its limitation and its working with all its pros and cons.
